Paddle Boarding 101
Stand-up paddle boarding, or SUP for short, is one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world. Besides providing a full-body workout that improves core strength, balance and flexibility, paddle boarding is just plain fun. Here’s your guide to beginner paddle boarding.
Stand-Up Paddle Boarding 101
Stand-up paddle boarding is a water sport that requires participants to stand on their board and use a paddle to propel themselves through the water, whether in an ocean, lake or river. No matter your age or fitness level, SUP offers a gentle learning curve, and unlike surfing, paddle boarding doesn’t require the ocean or waves and can take place on calm, flat water such as lakes or harbors. For even more of a rush, you can paddle into the surf and ride waves.
During your first time out on the water, you’ll learn how to balance and stand up. Plus you will learn how to turn your board and practice various paddling techniques. During the paddle, your mid-back muscles, shoulders, arms and abs are all engaged for a total-body workout.
Selecting SUP Equipment
When first starting out, you’ll need to choose SUP gear that’s right for your weight and ability. Choose a wider, flatter paddleboard for greater stability, and select a paddle that’s about 10” taller than you are – especially if you plan on flat-water paddling.
If you’re unsure of which gear is right for you, consult with an Ohana Surf Project’s experienced paddleboard expert. As SUP gear can be quite expensive, you can also opt for paddle board rentals, which let you try out this thrilling water sport before investing in pricey equipment.
